Accidents and Fatalities.

Auckland, May 21.

A fatal accident occurred on board the mail steamer Sonoma on Monday last, resulting in the death of L. D. Fergson, orie^bf the oilers. Whilst engaged in the work of piling the main shaft the unfortunate man was by some means caught in the revolving shaft, and sustained terrible injuries, his legs and "back being broken. He died 20 minutes afterwards. The body was brought on to Auckland and the interment took place this afternoon.. . The deceased was a native of Michigan, UJS.A., and was 32 years of age. Oamabu, May 21. As the night train from Dnnedin to Oamaiu was running the tracks near the engine left the line a few chains south of Waiareka trestle bridge. After crossing the bridge the coupling broke, and seven or eight tracks were piled up. It will take a day to repair' the damage and clear the line. Passenger traffic will not be suspended, and no one was injured.
