Lord Hopetoun.

Melbotjbne, May 21 It ia stated that all the cables sent by Lord Hppetouß in reference to his resignation have not been laid on the table of the Federal House. When the resignation was offered it is understood that Lord Hopetoun suggested to Mr Chamberlain to appoint a Commission to inquire into the whole matter, and it is presumed that this would refer to the Constitutional aspect rather than to his salary, which was fixed by the Coastitution. Since Parliament dealt tvith allowances the Government proposes in future to limit them to the maintenance of Goyefnmtent Houses at Melbourne and Sydney at a cost of .£5950 and to allow for executive expenses, express telegrams, telephones, ;82250, making the total with salary 100. The Government intends to asfc Parliament for a further grant of ,£SOOO to cover the cost of Lord Hopetoun's expenses for lighting, posts age, printing and fuel from January 3901 to May of this year*
