FAREWELL SOCIAL AND PBESENTA TION TO MISS HILDA LADLEY.
On Friday evening Miss Hilda Ladley, j •who is about to leave for South Africa with the New Zealand -contingent of teachers, was tendered a farewell social by the residents of Wakeneld, in the Oddfellows' Hall, and the gathering, was highly successful, there being a large attendance, including many from Nelson as well as other parts of the district. A short musical programme was given between the dances, songs being contributed by. Miss E. Gilbert, D. Cole, and Mr H. Ellis, a vocal duet by Misses J. Baigent arid Ladley, a pianoforte solo by MissD/Knapp, and a recitation by Mr T. Mant. Every item was much appreciate^ and accorded hearty applause. During ttie evening Major Franklyn; on behalf of tfhe
residents and school children of Wakefield, presented Miss Ladley with a handsome travelling bag ana dressing case combined, and in a neat and appropriate Bpeeon stated the high esteem in which Mibs Ladley was held by the school children and residents alike. The members of the Education Board also had a high opinion of Miss Ladley, and had granted her twelve months' cave of absence to enable her to go. to South Africa and engage in the work of teaching the Boer children. Major Franklyn -referred to the life in the concentration camps, and gave several humorous instances of- the ignoronce of ' the Boer women. He concluded by wishing Miss Ladley " God speed and a safe return," a wish that was heartily echoed by those present judging by the loud and continued applause which greeted Miss Ladley on her rising to receive the gift. The Rev. Canon-Lucas, on behalf of Miss, Ladley, thanked the residents and school children for their handsome present. The school children then' went home, and as they left the building Miss Ladley bade farewell to each one. Dancing was kept up with great vigor until "an early hour, splendid music being provided by Miss Fowler, aud the duties of M.C.s were efficiently carried out by Messrs G. Johnson and H Pearless . After the presentation, and prior to the departure of the younger generation, refreshments on a liberal scale were handed round and duly appreciated.
