Personal. — The last ' ' Gazette contains a notification^ that His Excellency, the Governcfr, has approved of the transfer of Major W. N. Franklyn, of theN.Z. Volunteers, to the N.Z. Militia, with his present rank. Nelson Jockey Club. — The monthly meeting of the Jockey, Club was held on Saturday evening, when Mr Finney occupied the chair. Mr Glen, the Secretary, presented the balance sheet of the Autumn meeting, which showed a small loss, but the general balance-sheet showed a profit of between £30 and £ 40. It was resolved to write off the bad debts, some unpaid nominations and acceptances of some years' back. Notice of motion was given by Mr John Sharp, junior, to alter the date of the annual meeting of members from July to May, as the dates fixed for the next year's .race meeting have to be in before the first of June. It was resolved to call a special meetiDg in three weeks' time to take into consideration the holding of a two days' race meeting during Show week. It was resolved to have balance-sheet printed and distributed to members befoie the annual meeting. ' Nelson Colleges — Teacher Dbawing. — We learn that twenty applicants were received for the position of teacher of drawing at the Nelsoa Colleges, and that Mr F. Huddlestoh, who has filled the position temporarily, has now received the appointmenti

Cfroiac Corps.— A mating of out Collegians was held on Saturday evenins at tfctf Co-operative Society's Board Room, wh«n Major Major, D.5.0., presided, «»£ there was a iood attendance. It tfite / e P° n r * e <* that a sufficient number of .names had been received to form the corps, and Mr W. Squires W elected the First Lieutenant and Mr Houlker, Second Lieutenant. Ihe intention is that the corps shall oe open to all old Nelson College Boys and to those of other secondary [schools. A committee consisting of Messrs Bannehr, Kempthorne, and Wright was appointed to act with the. officers in forwarding the object in view.

Compensation for Accident.— lt will be remembered in the Jubrlee week, Mr R. 0. Ellis met with a very serious laccident through her horse putting its foot throngh a culvert atj Motupiko. The matter, came up at the Waimea County Council's meeting yesterday- ** fas stated that there was not « bit i of sound" timber in the structure. Mr Ellis [considered the Council should pay part of the heavy expenses he had been put to, and stated his wife had not recovered from the injuries she had received. In' the course- of the debate it was emphasised thab that the Council could not be charged with contributory negligence, hence was not liable. ™^*j®** was decided to vote Mr Ellis £20 without prejudice. Much sympathy was expressed for Mrs Ellis, who has suffered much.

Presentation to Me W Ladle*.— At the? last meeting oi the Educational Institute, it was unanimously decided not to allow Mr W. Laclley, who, owing to ill-health, had been forced to resign his position as Inspector of Schools, to leave the service without showing him some mark of then* high appreciation of bis services as botft teacher and Inspector, A shilling subscription was decided upon, and practically the whole off the staff in the employ of the Board responded. The presentation took place at the Boys'' Centr last Saturday in the presence of 8 large number of teachers, when Mr F. Gf. Gibbs, M.A., President of the Institute, asked Mr Ladley's acceptance of a very handsome easy chair. Mr Gibbs referred to the esteem and goodwill entertained . by the teachers towards Mr Ladley, and expressed, on their behalf, the deep regret felt at the cause of Mr Ladley's resignation. Mr E. Cowles, speaking on behalf of the country teachers, hoped that a complete rest would prove beneficial, and that Mr Ladley would be able some day to occupy a seat on the Education Board. Mr F. V. Knapp responded on behalf of Mr Ladley, and, in thanking the teachers for their gift, alluded to the many letters he had received as Secretary of £he Institute, expressing sympathy and regret at their late Inspector's resignation, fleartycheers were given both for Mr and Mrs Ladley (the latter being also present), and the proceedings terminated by the teachers s'nging "For He's s JcMy Good Fellow."

A Bolt and Capsize.— On Saturday afternoon, a horse attached to Mr J. M. Groucher's bakers cart, from Richmond, made a bolt from near Mr Treaohevs residence in Toi-Toi Valley, and eventually capsized into the ditch in front of Mr Hayes shop. Mr J. Warnock, who lives on the opposite side of the road, quickly put forth endeavors to keep the borse quiet, while Messrs Burns, Boyes, Bichardson, and J. Orsaian helped to extricate it and the cart from the ditcb. The borse was not hurt much, and the principal injury to the cart was a broken sbaf f. It was extremely fortunate that the road was clear of children at the time.

A Function of Interest. —The business of the old and most highly esteemed firm of Sclanders" & Co., has been taken over by Messrs Levin & Co., Limited, of Wellington, and last night the old firm entertained its employees at dinner at the Masonic Hotel. Pressure on our space prevents a lengthy reference to this function in the present issue.

Departure of Sergt. Mackay.— Sergeant Mackay leaves Nelson by this morning's boat for Christchurch, Yesterday a large number of friends called upon the Sergeant to wish hira good-bye, and although— and properly so — there was no public demonstration, it is evident by the many expressions of goodwill evinced^ that; this officer carries with him the sympathy and hearty good wishes of the large majority of Nelson citizens.

Accident to Me William Taylor.— On

Thursday last a somewhat serious accident happened to Mr William Taylor, of Washington Valley. He was at the time engaged in carting cement to the Rai, when on the other side of the Wangamoa Saddle

his cart was capsized. Mr Taylor wa3 thrown out of the cart, and one of the casks of cement rolled on him. The driver of another cart and some roadmen conveyed

Mr Taylor to a whare,<where he remained, until Saturday afternoon, when he was brought into town. On "enquiring at a lata hour last night, we learnt that Mr Taylor was much injured about the hips, but no bones are broken. Dr Hudson is in attendance, and last night Mr Taylor waß doing as weil as could be expected considering the nature of his injury, and the acute pain he has suffered since the accident occurred.

Bicycle Accidenm. — Yesterday afternoon a young lady while cycling along the Stoke road, lost control of her machine, and sustained a severe fall. She was rendered unconscious and was conveyed to her house in a vehicle, where it was found that she bad been severely bruised about the face and shoulder, but no bones were broken.

The Druids, — At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Maitai Lodge, No. 301, U.A.0.D., was held at the Lodge Room last night. A number of the members gathered together to bid farewell to P. A. Bro. W. D. Lusty, who is leaving here shortly to take up a position upon one of the leading Auckland papers'; Bro Lusty has been aD active energetic membei* of the Order for some time past, having in addition to other offices, been an auditor for about two years. As an evidence of the esteem and respect in which Bro. Lusty was held, a number of highly congratulatory speeches were made, and a resolution was passed embodying a vote of thanks to the good brother for his past services and wishing him health, wealth, and prosperity in. his new sphere.

1.0. G.T. — Bro. Cameron, the Grand Secretary, has, this week, been visiting officially the Lojal Nelson and Loyal Marine Lodges. Last evening, assisted by Bro Calder the (District Deputy) and Sister Goodall, he installed the officers of the Loyal Nelson Lodge. The officers' reports were very satisfactory, and the membership was shown at sixty-eight. ,Bro Cameron was thanked for his official visit, and the assistant installing officers for their services. To-night, Bro Cameron will confer both the Grand Lodge and District Degrees on duly qualified candidates. The meeting will be held at the Eechabite Ball, commencing sharp at a quarter to eight. As it is seldom a grand Lodge officer visits Nelson, no doubt there will be a large attendance.

Pibb.— Last night, shortly " after ten o'clock, the general store in Gloucester street, near the Bailway Station, was discovered to.be on fire. As the key could not be quickly obtained, a large glass pane in the front door was broken, and on a neighbor entering he found the shop was full of smoke. After a while it was found the fire was under the counter, where there, was some paper and other material. A few backets of water soon extinguished the fire. The property is owned by Mrs Meyers.
