Progress.
New Plymouth, May 21. An influential meeting was held last evening, the Mayor presiding, with the object of ascertaining the feasibility of erecting a promenade pier on the sea beach, in close proximity to the railway station. A committee was constituted to give effect to the proposal. An engineer of high standing and of considerable local knowledge is to be asked to report in a preliminary way. It is not proposed to put up an extravagant structure, but one that can be added to. A guarantee fund for preliminary expenses has already been started, and is being well supported. Mr J. O. George has been appointed hon. secretary and treasurer. The project has been warmly taken up, and it is expected it will be supported by the whole district.
