NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board resumed yesterday morning, there being present — Messrs Talbot (in the chair), Bailie, T. Baigent, P.Best, Beuke, Maginnity, Phillips, and Look. The lease of the Eiwaka school reserve was signed by the members appointed. J Miss Johnstone (Burnett's Face) wrote explaining that she did not go up for the papil-teachers' examination because she intended to leave the service at the end of the year. It was ; resolved to excuse her, but to iniorm her that she ought to have asked permission. A discussion took place upon a proposal to take part of the Denniston school reserve for a post office. Eesolved that the man, Mr Phillips, and the Secretary interview Mr Hogben, Secretary to Education Department, on the subject. Mr 0. Lewis, East Takaka, wrote enclosing £2 said to be due to the East Takaka Committee. He stated it was the first time he had been asked for the money, and he objected to what had appeared in the newspapers on the matter. Besolved, that the letter be acknowledged, and Mr Lewis be informed that Jhere was no intention whatever to reflect upon his character. The following resignations were accepted : Mr P. Goleman teachership Capleston school; Miss Malloy, Churchill; Mr A. Douglas, Central Miss Symes (probationer) Lower Takaka. In the two last named, successors to be advertised for. ' -- Leave of absence was granted to Major Franklyn. The following appointments were made : Mr F. Coleman, Waimea West School ; Miss Malloy, Long Plain (Takaka) ; Miss Holdaway, (pupil teacher) Lower Takaka; Miss Arnold, Scott's household School (East Takaka) ; Miss Mabel Ellis, (pupil teacher) Town Schools; Itfiss C. The Departments wrote that there were no forest trees'nor model rifles for distribution. The matter of postponing the examination of the Sarau School was left to the Inspectors-. Information was received from North Canterbury, Wellington, and Wanganui respecting the treatment of the respective Boards as regards the maintenance pi aided and household schools. As regards aided schools, the figures showed subsidy from Boards— North Canterbury, £5 per head ; Wellington and Wanganui both £3 15s per head. The Nelson allowance is £4 11s 6d per head. A discussion ensued, and the opinion arrived at was that the Board, in the future, must take care not to establish small schools near to each other, &d the establishment of bo many small schools did not tend to get the best teachers. A household school at Mr George Gibbs', Wainui,. was granted on the usual conditions, and an application for one at Riwaka Valley was rejected; It was notified that Murchison Sphool had been closed for three weeks owing to an outbreak of scarlet fever. - The question of appointing a truant officer for Westport was postponed* several members desiring to se6 tb6 result in Nelson for twelve months from having the services of a like officer. ! I 'Mr Pirani's School attendance Bill, the Public Contracts Bill, and a report of. experiments at^ Canterbury Agricultural College were laid npon the tablet -The Canterbury Industrial Exhibition Committee forwarded circulars, asking same i to ''be distributed to the teachers, re ;the Exhibition to be held during , the jubilee celebrations of Canterbury Province. :- i Tbft Department sent the new regulations regarding scholarships for Maori children. The question of getting assistance during the examinations of the schools, owing; to Mr Ladley's indisnosition, was left in tha hands of the Chief Inspector. The latter officer said it would be impopsible for the inspection of private schools to be undertakeil this year. The Board then adjourned.
