Paeis, January 16. M. Zola has been presented with a gold medal weighing s£lb for his advocacy of justice to Captain Dreyfus. The death is announced of the Rev James Martineau, D.D., the well-known religious writer, and a younger brother of the late Harriet Martineau.' He was born at Norwich 21st April ISOS. London, January 16. Weddel & Co., in their anuual review, predict that there will be a fair demand for Australian frozen beef and mutton during the ensuing year at about last season's valueß. The firm considers that the present brisk state of business will be suffieent to maintain prices, though the war may interfere with these anticipations. Melboubne, January 18. A caucus of the Opposition has decided not to move a want of confidence motion till after the Premiers' conference on the Imperial Federation Enabling Bill. Sydney, December 18. The crew of the Norwegian barque Corrizal, which was wrecked at Baker Island, have arrived here. The Postmaster - General seems favourably disposed towards the Eastern Extension Company's Cape cable scheme. He ia now considering whether the colony shall interfere in urging the construction of the Pacific Cable.
