SOCIAL AND DANCE AT THE PROVINCIAL HALL.

Last night, being the eve of so many Volunteers and others getting away for Wellington to see the contingent off, was not the best night for the social and danoe in aid of the Patriotic Fund, which was held in the Provincial Hall, through the joint efforts of Messrs G. E. Levien, A. Lennie, W. Millar, C. Nesbitt, and A. D. Burns. The affair proved very enjoyable, and the sum of £7 8s was raised for the fund. The Mayor (Mr J. A. Harley) opened the proceedings, and referring to the fact that three of the first New Zealand contingent had been killed and others wounded, pointed out how much it was desirable that provision should be made for those who might require relief* A musical programme, with dancing, was then entered

Upon. Those- taking • part : in. the former were Misses Fowler (2), Hornig (2), Messrs C Larkine, B. H. Moller, O. Newport, W. Light,, and.. Fitzpatrick. the latter being recalled for his clever performance on tin whistles* Mr ■£, P. Rishworth recited "The Absent Minded Beggar," and Mr H. Oakley danced an Irish jig. Dancing was kept up with spirit till 12 o'clock, the music being snpplied principally by Miss Levien, Miss Fowler, Messrs H. Clear and H. Light supplying extras. The Committee before named wish to thank all those who assisted to the cud that no expenses whatever were incurred, including Messrs P. Moyes and A. Burns, the doorkeepers, who gave their services gratis. A the conclusion, three hearty Cheers were given for Miss Levien, who supplied the major part of the music.
