ELECTION OF COUNCILORS. The Band tamed put in the evening and performed in front, of the . Mottleka Hotel, and in the internals o£ the music several" speeches vfdre made; by the successful and unsuccessful candidates for the irtayor ality, and, secondly, by the successful and unsuccessful (with two or three exceptions) for the office *of Town Councillor, most of whom briefly thanked those who had supported ttieni and Hoped thai the change now entered upon would prove berie&sial and advantageous to the new borough. Councillor Kirkpatrick, of Nelson, also spoke a few words, ttrid complimented the residents upon having secured the borough, and hoped the new Council Would not be too cautious; but that they would endeavor to make the place attractive to visitors, as Motueka was, in his opinion, much more healthy than Nelson; The whole of the speeches were impromtu, no previous notice of anything of the khld having been given, and all speeches were, made only in response to the call of the Mayor-elect.
