FAREWELL MEETING.

At eight o'clock last evening a farewell meeting was held in the Theatre Royal. So large was the attendance that it was necessary to conduct an overflow meeting in the All Saints' Schoolroom. The choir sang Hymn 328, and the congregation then joined in singing No. 178. The Rev J. 11. Simpson read from Ephesiansvi, commencing at verse 11, after which Mr Spence, of Otago University, engaged in prayer. While the collection was being taken up, a selection from Sankey's hymn book, " Peace be still" was very sweetly rendered by the choir.

Mr Sallmon, who had charge of the meeting, at this point gave to the delegates a few practical suggestions for their guidance in beginning a new college year, so that the lessons learned in ih.e Bummer School may be turned to practical account. A highly interesting feature of the meeting was a series of short addresses, lasting not more than two minutes each, in which some of the delegates testified to the great personal benefits they had received daring the week's meetings, and spoke of the im-

pressions which this first Summer School had left upon their minds. The following delegates took part:— Mr Spence, Miss Crump, Mr W. S. Strong, of the C.1.M., Mr C. E. Fox, Mr McMaster, Mt Shore, Mr Haslam, Misses McGregor, Walker, McCalluni, and Robinson. After singing hymri 12$, the shdrt &d«" dressSs.were epntwued bf Mefisrs MiJWUliatn, Keall, E, Kohere, A. Simpson, Mr Barraclough, Miss Elackstone, Miss McWiiliam, Messrs Holloway, Sharpe, Stuckej, Mis 3 Greensill, Mr H. Crump, Eev J. Crump, Miss. Mules, Miss I. Crump, arid I Mrs Robinson. Rev J. Crump mentioned the fact that 100 years ago there was only one communicant to be found in the University to which Mr Sallmon belongs, andMrSallmon contrasted with that the fact thai in the same University to-day there is a Christian tJniqri of 1500 rieiriberij, r . After another hymn, Mr Salbnon gave a farewell address to delegates and friends in Nelson. In the colleges to which the students return there will be a great battle to fight, and they must ij stand shoulder to shoulder. Their position reminded him of Gideon's* small army that vanquished the Midianites. What was one secret of their success ? It is recorded of them that they stood every man in his place. The work to which we return will call for all our fidelity, courage, loyalty, and above all for a strong faith in God. Going back to some of our colleges we shall exchange a congenial spiritual atmosphere tor a most uncongenial. There let us stand every man in his place and shoulder to shovdder we shall count for something in the college Ufa, 1 thongb as units we should fall. .

Mr Sallmon's earnest impressive address was most attentively listened to throughout, and although during themtetjng two opportunities were given to those who wished to retire, the crowded audience remained until the close of the meeting at a quarter to ten.
