Injustice to the British*
A Protest. Johankjzsbubg, December 24. Recently a disturbance occurred in Johannesburg, opposite the residence of Mr Edgar, a British subject during which the police entered Mr Edgar's house, and shot him dead. At the trial of the shooter the charge of murder was reduced to one~of culpable homicide. Mr Conyingham Greene, the British Agent, has, however, demanded that the charge of murder should be re-substituted. Several meetings of British residents have been held in connection with the matter, and resolutions pas* sed in favour of petitioning the Queen to secure justice. The petitioners complain of the in* tolerable oppression to which British* «rs are subjected. They ate not permitted to carry fife-arms, while the Transvaal Government is arming'tbe residents of other nationalities gratia.
London, December 25. The Bight Hon J. Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies, in reply to a correspondent, said that he was thoroughly protecting British interests in the Transvaal as we'l as e'Y erytyhere else. JbHiNitesßtart?, December 26. A party of 5000 Britishers marched to the Vice-Consul's house here ana* presented him with a petition to the Queen setting forth their grievances. The Police did not interfere with the -demonstration, though they were strongly reinforced from Pretoria. Pbetoria, December 26. The field-cornet who has been the 6atrse of friction with Britishers in the tfranevail has been suspended from duty. While the military commandants were discussing the iadvisableness of resuming operations against the rebel chief Mpefu, one of them, Major Eramus, declared that the Transvaal artillery compared favorably with that of any. of the European Powers. Later. The constable who shot Edgar at Johannesburg has been re-arrested, bail being refused. , Charge against Police. December 28. President Kroger has appointed a commission to .enquire into the charges against the prliceof brutality towards Cape native boys.
