"The Nelsonian."
The last issue of " The Nelsonian," the Nelson College journal, is an extremely interesting number. Included in its contents is a valedictory article referring to the retirement of Mr J. W. Joynt, M.A. Mention is made of Mr Joyut's appointment to the College in 1889, when the school was at a very low ebb, and it is said that "it became Mr Joynt's fixed determination, therelore, to raise the standard of the College, and to place it on the surest foundation." The writer then proceeds to say: "Nelson College owes to his untiring efforts for her welfare the proud position which to-day she occupies as one of the leading secondary institutions in the Colony — if not, as some of us firmly believe, the leading institution." It is then said that routine school work and all the extra matters which go to broaden and deepen boys' characters have been attended to with the greatest diligence, and as permanent witnesses of Mr Jeynt's sympathy with all kinds of athletics, the tennis court and gymnasium, erected in a ' great measure at his own cost, are pointed to. Mr Joynt's constant endeavor to develop the social life of the College, his assistance in the study of musio, his encouragement in the dramatic entertainments of the students, and, further, his care to instil ' into the boys under his care sound moral and religious truths, and generally his endeavors to raise the tone of the school and to elevate its morals, and this more by example than by precept, are acknowledged, and better testimony as to the successful efforts of the College Principal could not be given than is supplied in this College journal, which is edited by the boys themselves. The appointment of Mr Littlejohn, M.A., to the post of Principal is evidently a popular one within the College, and the advent of Mr G. Harper Wing as classical master is being looked forward to with high hopes. A great deal of school news™ is given im the number before us, including reports of presentations to Mr Joynt and to the Lady Matron, Miss Ollivier, whose kindness is referred t» gratefully, and who, it is apparent, has gained the esteem of the boarders. The " OM Boys Column " will be interesting to many, and Mr Walter Tomlinson contributes a chatty and interesting account of a trip from Sydney to Singapore. We must also mention that the current issue of " The Nelsonian" contains an excellent portrait ef Mr J, W. Joynt.
