North Island Trunk Railway.

Wellington, September 30. Mr Seddon, in replying to a deputation of seventeen Auckland and Taranaki members, said the statement that the Government had not kept faith on the subject of the completion of the North Island Main Trunk line did not apply to the preseni , more than to any previous Government. ' Sufficient time would have to be given the Government to consider the question of substituting the Stratford for the Central I route, as the matter was one in which they ' could not act hastily, nor could they entirely reverse the policy endorsed by Governments and Parliaments for tfce past ' sixteen years. The fullest enquiries required to be made before the Governmeal could give a definite decision on the question of routes.
