Mdtueka Institute.

ANNIVERSARY BALL.

This event, which has come to be considered here the event of the year, duly came off on Wednesday last, and was a most pronounced success in every respect. It was thought by some that owing to influenza being prevalent in the district, coupled with the fact that lately we have had a surfeit of socials and dances, the attendance would be very email. This forecast, however, proved to be incorrect, as the dancing space in the large hall was fully occupied. , The ladies displayed exquisite taste in their plain and fancy dresses, and what with all sorts of ancient and modern gentlemen, the " tout ensemble," as viewed from the gallery, was most picturesque and striking. Where so many of the ladies and their costumes were so beautiful, space will not permit of mentioning names* The supper was quite a feature of the evening, and the ladies who superintended this department are deserving of every praise. The floor was in splendid order, in fact it was so slippery that some of our well-known scorchers were slowed down to the regulation eight miles an hour. The music of the Orchestral Society left nothing to be desired, and Mr A. Miller deserves great credit both for the good class of music he provides and for the manner in which he has improved the playing of the above Society. The gathering departed about 2 a.m., everyone seeming well satisfied at having had such an enjoyable time.
