PROPOSED CABLE TO THE CAPE.
Melbourne, February 28.
The Mayor of Melbourne and the Chairman of the Stock Exchange consider that the guarantee demanded by the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company for laying an alternative cable between the Cape and Australia unacceptable. . They strongly ddvocate a Pacific cable as cheaper and better. The Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce sajs that the capital required for the Pacific cable is to be borrowed at a low rate of interest, Careful estimates, on a low basis, as to the amount of the probable cable business, have made it 'appear tolerably certain that the revenue from the start would
