Enner ■ Glyxn Coal Mining Company, Limited.— The annual meeting of shareholders in this Company will be held at the Oddfellows' Hall this evening at eight •'clock. Forest Conservation.~A meeting of the Committee appointed to take steps to have the reservation of the Ronga and Opouri Valleys sustained will be held at the Council Chamber this evening, when business of importance will be brought forward. All who are interested in the matter are invited to be present, whether on the Committee or not. It is to be desired that the same interest manifested at the first meeting will be maintained, so that success may crown the efforts being made to preserve an invaluable inheritance to the people of this and the Marlborough districts. Visiting Cyclists.— Two Christchurch cyclists, Messrs W. G. Wray and Faryne, of the " Canterbury Ramblers," are at present staying with the Nelson Consul, Mr G. A. Robbie, o£ Appleby. They left Christchurch on the 18th, and have been visiting all places of interest on the way. They found the roads to Kumara very loose, in fact through the Bealey and Otira Gorges the bicycles had to be carried the greater part of the way, owing to the number of large slips. At Hokitika they were royally entertained by the Consul, and amongst other places were taken to the beautiful Lakes Kanieri and Mahinapua. At Reef ton they visited several of the mines, but their pleasant recollections of this place were somewhat damped by the loss of their baggage and cash in the Mangahua River. In consequence of this mishap the tour was continued under difficulties, and but for the kindness of the settlers along the road the enterprising Ramblers must have perished by the wayside. For accommodation the tourists found shelter in abandoned huts, and enjoyed the luxury of well earned repose under sundry empty packs. Upon interviewing the Consul on arrival at Appleby all difficulties speedily vanished. Mr Robbie now joins the party, which intends leaving for [Christahurch to-day, As they purpose staying only two days at Hanmer Springs they should reach Christchurch on Saturday night- In their coming ride we wish them every success, which they richly deserve for their plucky riding under exceptional difficulties. Large Picnic— On Saturday the pupils of the Toi Toi Valley School, with their teachers and many parents and friends proceeded to Belgrove by the ten o'clock train to enjoy a day blackberrying. The train comprised five trucks and twelve carriages, with two locomotives. The large party thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and returned safely at seven o'clock in the evening. Getting About Again. — The cricketing and other friends of Mr Sam Fowler were extremely pleased to welcome him on the the Park once more, the veteran cricketer being present at the match oh Saturday. Many enquiriei weremade'as to his welfare. Mr Fowler is slowly recovering from his serious accident, which happened five months ago, and he hopes in the course of time to regain full use of his injured foot. To the cricketers, with whom he is a favorite, it will afford great pleasure to see him well and strong again.;

The BuiiiEß Dreeoe.— Our own corres- b j'ondent telegraphs that the Buller dredge v attained 28ozs 17dwts of gold for 132 hours, r making a total for the four weeks of 104ozs t Idwts. o Accident.— A report has reached us that j! Mr Hounsell met with a rather aeYef£ aoci- l i'ent on Saturday, when he was engaged s Upon his own property in Grove-street, the c Wood, in lopping a limb from a tree. The v branch gave way sooner than was antiei- s pated, and we are informed that Mr Houn- s sell was thrown to the ground, falling upon * his back, and that he was also struck by the l branch. We wish him a speedy recovery. a Utter Darkness.— We do not know who is responsible for the fact that the street lamps were not lighted last night, but it is a, reproach to the city that on so dark a night the lamps should have remain :d unlit. It is to be hoped that the Council will take action, and insist upon the lamps being lighted on such dark nights. Deer Stalking.— Although we hear of a few more stags having been shot, the deer stalkers on the whole do not appear to have \ had particularly gaod sport yet* This is accounted for by the fact that the hillsides continue so dry that there is little inducement for the stags to leave the bush. Some have been fortunate, however, and we hear that Mr Whiting has secured a second eight pointer, a fine beast. Death of an Old Settles. — We regret to hear of the death of Mr Jones, who, for a great many years, had resided in Brook street. The deceased was formerly in the employ of Messrs Hood & Goodfellow, electroplaters, of Hatton Garden, London, and he came to Nelson in 1860, since when he has carried on his business here, He was a member of the Baptist Church. A New Year's Gift— Last Chance. — Mr T. Blake Huffam reminds his customers that to-day is the last day on which a share may be secured in his New Year's gift distribution, and he also directs attention to the terms upon which he supplies relii able pianos and organs.
