Ottawa, February 24. Mr John Lowles, M.P., for Shoreditch, who recently visited Australia in the interests of the Empire Trade League, is now in Canada. At Ottawa he stated that he had secured the consent of the Australian Governments to join in an elastic programme of preferential trade. London, February 25. Lord Salisbury privately received an important deputation of merchants and shippers relative to the injustice occasioned by the French differential tariff in West Africa. The Prime Minister promises to make representations to the French Government on tbe subject. London, February 25. A Greek War indemnity Loan of £6,600,000 has been arranged, Britain, France and Bussia guaranteeing £4,000,000 at 3 per cent. Lord Salisbury states that the evacuation of Thessaly by the Turks is to commence when the loan is issued. London, February 25. It is expected that the cargo of the Mataura will be saved. Salvage operations have been resumed. Captain Schomberg. Commander of the warship Victorious, is to -be tried by court-martial in connection with the grounding of the vessel at Port Said. Stringent rules have been made by the Government for the control of the British South Africa, Company. Local • legislation and taxation are invested in the Administrator, and the Company's resolutions and appointments are to be subject to the vote of the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
