English V. Australia.
The Final Test Match. Englishmen Lost 5 Wickets for 301 Runs- ( ?6t United Preas Association.) Sidnet, February 27. Fine weather and a great attendance favored the first day's play of the final test match. McLaren won the toss, and, electing to bat, the Englishmen held the wickets all day, the score standing at 301 for the loss of five wickets, when the stumps were drawn. The scores are : — McLaren . * . . . . 65 Wainwright 49 Ranjinsinhji 2 Haward 47 Storer 44 Druce, not out.. . . ..43 Hirst, not out . . . . . . 43 ' Trott took two wickets for 40 runs, Jones two for 71, Trumble one for 67. Most of the batsmen showed very cautious play. Trott sent a tempting one to Ranjitsinbji, who lifted it to Gregory, and little Sydney effected a brilliant catch. Druce and Hirst livened things up considerably, both giving a good display of hitting. Later. The attendance at the match yesterday numbered 36,000. Contingents were present from all parts of Australia and New Zealand, and all the available hotel accoinjmodation in Sydney is taken up by the visitors. The takings at the gates amounted to £1450.
