COLLEGE SWIMMING SPORTS.
The various events in connection with the College Swimming Sports came off yesterday afternoon, atDenne'sHole, when the weather and the temperature ef the water were alke suitable to the occasion* The geography of the Hole, which has been a favorite resort of Nelson youth for many years, is altering rapidly, and it is just within the bounds of probability that at no distant date it will be a hole no longer. The stretch of water has increased in width, but deposits of shingle are continually diminishing its depth. The provision of a suitable freshwater bathing place is a matter that might well engage the attention of our City Fathers. For the championship there were but two competitors, Stuckey and Preshaw, of whom the former carried off the palm with 19 points out of 22, while the latter received 16 points. Perhaps the best event of the day was the race for old boys, which was won in fine style by King, an exchampion, after a tough struggle with Milner. The handicap race brought out a large field, showing the young idea's preference for a start, even if the handicapping be rough and ready. The Belay Bace put five sets of three into the water, and as each man of the set did his fifty yards, and passed on the running to the second, and he to the third, the event created more than usual interest. We must not forget to mention that the College man, who is part of the institution, supplied the needed stimulant in the shape of coffee, which, needless to say, was duly appreciated. The following are the events : — Diving for Plates (Championship), 1G plates, one dive: Stuckey (16 plates), 1; Preshaw (8 plates), 2. Belay Bace, 150 yds: Moyes, Simpson, and Usher, 1 ; Mules, Houlker, and Blac-kett,-2. Pick-a-back Bace: Preshaw (with Hudson) 1 : Boon (with Harris) 2. 50 Yards on the Back (Championship) : Stuckey 1, Preshaw 2. Neat Header, 3 dives.' Harris, 2H points out of 29, 1; Usher, 18 points. 2." There were eight competitors, of whom the two placed men were easily best. They were placed in the order given after a second trial. Crocodile Bace: Leggatt (head) and Boon (feet), 1 ; T. Houlker (head) and J. Houlker (feet), 2. Four pairs started. The event, which is doubtless new to the racing world, consisted in pairs of boys swimming so that the one provided the fore and the other the hind legs of the animal in question. 100 Hards Handicap: Blackett (Bsees) 1, Moyes (4secs) and Usher (lOsecs) 2. 50 Yards (Old Boys) : King 1, Milner 2, Drummond 3. 50 Yards (Championship): Stuckey 1, Preshaw 2. Time 48isecs. 50 Yards (under 14); Lightbaud 1, B. Totton 2, Harris 3. . Long Dive: T Houlker 1, Mullan 2. 200 Yards (Championship) : Preshaw 1, Stuckey 2.
