Evading the Customs.
Gisbobne, May 20. For some time past the authorities have Bnspeo'ed : tbat quantities of uncustomed goods have been brought ashore from certain steamers lyiog in the bay. A watoh waß therefore set, with tberesolt that last evening Constable Crawford (eotiog tinier instructions from Mr Pasley, C -Hector of Oub'ooib), awaited the retara of the launch Soark on the last ttip to the s.?. Tasmai is. As the passengers stepped on to the wharf he went up to one of them, a man named George H. Evans, who keepß a bair-dresterß* and tobaooonistB 1 saloon, and told him that the Collector of Customs wished to Bpeak to him. Evans was oariying a sack, whioh was found to contain 71ba of tobaooo, 21bs of aoap. and 8 dozen pipes. He was arrested and brought before the Goorfc this rooming and remanded for eight days Bail in two cure iea of £50 and a personal bond of £100 wes allowed.
