SOLID GOVERNMENT VOTE— NELSON, WESr COAST, AND MARLBOROUGH.
(' Colonist,' December 7.)
For the Oity of Nelson Electorate we bay« to congratulate Mr John Graham upon his re-election, which iB aesuted, as (he retatng yet to come in oannot affect the result. Both Bides worked hard, and Mr Graham had a combination of no ordinary kind to fight, bo that lie has reason to be proud of the result. The proceedings were of the most orderly nature daring the day, and indeed we have only one regrettable circumstance to record. The shops and factories closed at noon, so ** that the afternoon was altogether holiday in charaoter. The hotels also closed from noon till saven o'olock. Shortly after seven o'olook the first returns were received at this office, and by means of lantern light the figures were projeoted upon a BCteen at one of tha windows of tbe office. A considerable orowol of persons assembled and kept about oar premises till an early hour this morning, eaoh return exhibited being perused with great iote-eßt. From time to time che6rs were given as reports from the various districts were reoeived Bnd these showed that Mr Graham bad a majority,* hiob though fluctuating, wbb from first to last maintained. The last return available showed that Mr Graham had a majority of 345 votes, and there was Btill one return to come in Croixelles, whiob cannot affect the reeu't, indeed it ia confidently anticioated that thia plaoa will increase Mr Graham's majority. Cheers were given when the lantern slide showed that the Premier had been returned with so large a majority. As the hour got late and the local returns were exhibited cheers were given for Mr Graham, and for the Colonist, and the orowd dispersed, only to gather with increased numbers, when Mr Graham on reaohing Trafalgar street was carried shoulder high down Trafalgar street, and by way of Btidge street to this office, cheers being given and "He's a jolly good fellow" sang en route. The demonstration was renewed at this office, and Mr Graham shortly addressed the assemblage. Ths regretable inoident to which we have referred is that several panes of glaaa were broken in tha office of the < Evening Mail. 1 We have in times paat suffered from the Bame thing, and have no sympathy with the aots of thosa who we are convinced, were not con* nectedwith any party. But little less interest was taken ia the Motueka election than that for the City of Nelson. The first retarns from the Motoeka Bide gave Mr Hursthouse a substantial majority, but gradually as retarn after return was received Mr MoEenzie forged ahead until he had a small lead, whio j, however, he lost, and Mr Hurthouse was again at the head of the poll till the later retarns were reoeived, ami at the time that the last available, that of Totaranui, was reoeived, Mr McKenzie was 49 ahead of hia opponent, with the returns from Kongaha, Karamea, and Promised Land yet to come in, and these it ia fully expected will increase Mr MeKenzie'a majority. Later retarns give Mr MoKenzie 109 ma^ jority, with Kongdha to come.
The returns from Wairau show that Mr Buick has a lead of 102 upon Mr Mills with the Sounds returnfi to come which are expected to be in favor of Mr Mills so that the result shou'd b 3 close. Later information states that Mr Buiok's majority has been reduced to 13 and the relnrnß yet to oome are expected to give Mr Mills a small majority.
Later returns give Mr Mills 58 majority.
With the Premier, Messrs Graham, Gainess, McKenzie, O 'Regan, and Mills returned Nelsan, Westland, and Marlborougb will. form a solid vote.
