THE NELSON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual general meeting of this Society was held in the City Council Chamber last eight, when the attendance was only email. Mr Bannefar was voted to the chair. The Chairman expressed regret that there was not a larger attendance, as he lookad ppon the work of that Society as important? in that it encouraged the beautifying of their surroundings by the cultivation of flower*, and aided in a more material manner ih» production of the fruits of the earth by ;f uttering a spirit of rivalry tending towards improvement. The email attendance might be accounted for by counter attractions and the Btate of the weather, while it was'p'dßslble that members of the S ciety were content (o leave (he management to a few, seeing that the Society was progressing. He would, however, have liked to see more present, in order to give a good start t-> the work of the year. It would be satisfactory to members to know that the Society had now a cr dit balance of £58 10s 6d without liabilities, and they also had some assets, suob as tables, show eianda, etc ; while a year's interest would shortly be doe on t3O which bad teea de-» posited in the Post Offioe Saviogs Bank. He then read the ba'anee sheets, whioh had been audited by Mr Calders. The last Spring Show resulted in a loss of £9 3a Id, the receipts at the doors amounting to only £18 10s 6d, and the prize money alone to £18 Bs. On the Chrysanthemum Show, however, there .had been a profit of £4 17a lOd, the receipts t>t the doors having amounted to £41 03 lOd, and £8 5s 6d was presented for epeoikl prizes. The amount paid in priz-s wata £27 4e. In addition to the receipts in connection with each Show, there were members' subscriptions, whioh amounted to £99 10a, and deducting from that ihe net loss of £4 5b 3d, there was £25 4s 9d, which was the profit made last year, acd this added lo the balance with whioh the year commenced, gave them £58 10s 6d. This, he thought, w«s highly satisfactory, ispcially as in the previous year they tu^t on both Shows -£ 14 10s 9don the Spring Show, and 12s 6d on the Chrysanthemum Show, although they had the members' subscription; against that. Mr Moller moved the adoption of ibe aooounts, which he thought were exceedingly satisfactory, for the societies In nearly every other province in New Zealand lost money. Mr Merrick eeoonded the moti n, whion \ was carried. The election of omoere was then proceeded with. Dr Boor was re-eleoted President ; Messrs Bannehr, Adams, and Calders were elected Vioe-Preeidents ; Mr J. 0. Burford was reeleoted Secretary, and Mr Moller was reeleoted Treasure-. Mesdames Merriok and L. A^amß, Misses Trask, Gaßooigne and Bell, Messrs Sheather, Allan, 8. Boltoo, J. Ward, Merriok, 3. Htle, and Dr Hudson were elected members of the Committee. Messrs Bolton and Bannehr were elected Auditors. The Chairman then proposed that the thanks of the Sooiely be oonveyed to the donors of prizes, and to ih ■ judgesjor their labors. The proposal was adopted unanimously. On the motion of Mrs Merriak, it was resolved tbat all present volunteer to dippose of membership tickets, becoming responsible for any not returned by next meeting. On the motion of Mr Moller, it vas reeolved to place another £20 at interact in the Savings Bank, Mr Moller then moved that a sum of about three guineas be voted for the purpose of making a presentation ti Mrs Barford, by way of matkirg their estimation of the good services rendered the Society by Mr Burford. Miss Trask seconded the motion, which waß oarried unanimously. Mr Barford spoke very highly of the valuable Eervioes rendered by Mr A. H. Baio, whom, he was sorry to say, they had lost, and also by Mr Ward, who had undertaken very onerous duties. He moved that the thanks of the Society to both these gentlemen be put on record, and an intima.ion of the vote oonveyed to Mr Bain. The motion was carried unanimously. A hearty vote of thanks was also acoorded the Treasurer, Mr Moller. Mr Burford suggested that efforts should be made to reader the spring show more popular. From the reportß of other societies he noticed tbat all lost on the spring chows. Discussion followed, and several suggestions were made, one being that they should endeavor te induce sobool children to exhibit on a large scale. On the motion of Mr Bolton it was agreed tbat the spring show be opened on or about the 20th November. On the motion of Dr. Hudson, it was reBolved that a sub-committee, consisting of Mrs Merrick, Mies Tra-.k, Messrs Moller, Bo.ton, Burford, and the mover, meet on Monday next to frame the prize schedule fjr submission to the Committee.
