Shooting.— The Waimea Rifles fired the seventh matoh for Hobson's trophy on Saturday laßt, in nasty weather. Tbe ranges waie 200, 300, and 500 ya*ds, seven shots at eaoh, and the following were the six highest scorers : —

„ &. uaigent .. 26 20 [4 1U 60 Thobouqhbbep Horse. —We have been afforded the opportunity of inspecting a splendid thoroughbred horse which Mr A Wilkie has procured, and intends to use for stud purposes this season. Clinker is really a magnifioent animal, standing 16 hands 2 inohes. He is by Young Towton from 1.0., the latter being by Dlomedes, from an imported Sydney mare. It will be remembered that Diomedes was imported from Eng and by that capital judge of a good horse, the late Hon. W. Robinson. Young Towton was by tbe imported Towton, waß full brother to the Peer, sire of Manuka, Peeress, Darebin, Australian Peer, and others, and was the sire of more good horses than any other horse that evei' visited this dißtriot ; and was tbe sire of the champion trotters Chanticleer, Wakatu and Nap-i-Nap. The former, after proving himself to be the best trotter in New Zealand, was afterwards taken to Australia and won numerous raoes there, and for two years in succession was victorious in the Free For All Trot in Sydney. The Diomedes b'ood is to be found in many of the be3t trotters in the Colony, including Rams and Victor, Clinker took flrsi prize at the last Takaka Agricultural Society's Show, and Mr Wilkie's horse will, no doubt, be well patronised this season. An advertisement giving particulars of Clinker's routes for tha season will appear in a future issue. Magistrate's Court.— At the Magistrate's Court yeßterday, Harry Vincent Phillips was oharged before the Stipendiary Magistrate by his wife Sarah Ann Phillips, with failing to provide for the support of his two children. Complainant Btated that Bhe wa9 separated from her husband, who had agreed to allow 7s per week for eaoh child, whioh she found insufficient. Defendant consented to an ord?r being made requiring him to find IC3 per week for each ohild. Reception by an Abtibt. — Yesterday after* noon Mr H. W. Eirkwood, the well-known attiet, threw open his new Btudio in Trafalgar street, above the rooms of Mr T. B. Huff am, to a large number of invited guests, who were reoeived by Mr and Mrs Kirkwood. On easels and npon tbe walls were a large numb r of piotures, including paintings by Air Kirk wood himself, which commanded muoh admiration, and also very many by pupils of that gentleman. The work of Mr Eirkwood ounnot fail to command attention, but tbe work of his pupils came in for a large meed of praise, and thus was the master honored. Mr Eirkwood's guests spent an exceedingly pleasant afternoon, for their entertainment included very enjoyable musical interpretations, including vooal solos by Mrs Howie, Mibs Q. Melhuißh. and Mr Kidson ; instrumental solos by Herr Balling (viola), Mr Kirkwood (flute), Miss Melhuiah (piano) ; and a duett by Miss Eidson (violin) and Herr Balling (viola). It is hoped that all present memberß as well as those who oontemplate joining the Club will be in attendance. Fire Alabh.— Some consternation was occasioned about seven o'olook last evening by the vigorous ringing of the firebells, for a strong wind was blowing at the time. It proved, fortunately, that the cause of the alarm was merely a burning chimney in Hardy street, and that was extinguished within a few minutes of the alarm being given.
