The Volunteers. — We learn from the . ' Post ' that 345 Volunteers of all ranks were present when Colonel Pitt, Surgeon Boor, Majors Bonar and Harris received their 20 years' service medals. Bis Excellency said he was awa-e tbat the officers whom he had decorated bad been many years in the Voluni teer service, and had done their duty in a i manner that reflected every credit on them. ■ The Colony's Volunteers deserved every en- ' conrapement, and he would do hi 3 best to see , tbat they got it. He would ask every Volan- ; teer to use every effort not only to make i himself efficient, but to show his appreciation of the fact that discipline waa not only right, , bat also the aome of military cervices. Col. i Fox tbanked the Governor for the kindly interest he had always taken in the Volunteer force of the Colony, and especially for his kindness in attending to do honor to the four omcors who had been bo loyal to her Majesty. Colonel Pitt was a biisht example of what a Volunteer officer should be. He believed the Colony would find his (Colonel Fox's) annual report on the Volunteers of New Zealand to be of a satisfactory character. The defences had materially improved, and steps were og taken to still further imp.ove them.
