Narbow JSbcaje of Fire. — By the merest accideni, what bade fair to be a very dig-.s-trous fire, was averted last night. The Corporation recently acquired premises npar the Couticil Chamber, which extend from Trafalg« street to a thoroughfare at the rear, and part of these premises have been fitted up as workshop 3 . On the gronnd-floor ft the baok there i3 a small forge, and a targe collection of tools is kept in readiness for effecting repairs conneoted with ths gas and water departments, while above stairs it seems that meiers are tested and repaired. Upon the upper floor was a fire place, which it is no* apparent, was bo oonatructedthat the hearthstone— about an inoh and a half of mottar — rested on tbe joi*3ta and boarding of the building. A fire seems to have been lighted yesterday, but owing to the construction of the fira pkoe the woodwork of the building became ignited, and was juet bursting into a nice flame last night, when Mr T. Fathers, who had started off for a conititutional eleoted to return home by way of the baok lane. He b&w the fire in the workshop, and called Mr Flett, who resides under the same roof as the Town Clerk's offioe, and between them they extinguished the fire. Within some three or four feet of the burning wood there were tins of oil, spirits of wine, and other inflammables, and had the fire remained und&tected for a few minutes longer, the City Club and the Post and Telegraph office would have bsen in serious danger. On the faots being represented to Constable O'Brien, who was on duty in that vicinity, tbe officer named watched oarefully to provide against a further outbreak. Jenkikb' Hill Prospecting: Association. — A general meeting of the shareholders in thia Association will be held in Sigley's Hall this evening at eight o'clock. We anticipate that there will be a large attendance. Motoeka. — Our own correspondent writ.s : — The petition of the clients of tee Baok ot New Zealand having been sent forward, and presumably now in the hands of the directors, as an immediate result, tLe Bank will not now oloae oo the 24th inst., as originally intended, but will remain open one week longer. In the meantime a public meeting is to be held in the Foresters' Hall on Friday evening, the 21st inst., to discuss matters relating thereto, the principal object being to ascertain if by any possibility more support can be pioans&d fur ths future, sufficient to induce the directors to continue the agency as a permanent branch. It is understood that under sny ouoamstanoes Mr Oook, the present agent, will be moved in about a fortnight, having been appointed to a position ia the North Island. Maobi Wobk fob Bale.— An excellent opportunity of buying some real Maori work in the way of ornamental flax baskets, feather mats, etc., is now being offered. The Maoris of Motneka are desirous of building a new churoh in place of the old one, which is now very delapidated, and, to raise money for this purpose, are making a large number of these at tides for sale. A quantity have been sent over here, and may bs seen for the present at Dr. Mackie's by any one anxious to secure a few, and help on a good cause. We may mention that it is becoming more and more difficult to obtain genuina Maori work of this description, so that this opportunity ia rather an exceptional one, the more so as the Maoris are willing to execute] special orders for kiwi mats (now rather rare), oarved wood, or walking sticks, etc. If the present designs for the new churoh are carried out, it will be an object of no little interest, as it is intended to decorate the interior with various kinds of Maori ornamentation. Open Lodge Meeting. —The Loyal Marine Lodge's open meeting at the Port Hall last evening was very well attended. Mrs Duncan, the District Deputy, presided. A capital and varied programme, comprising sixteen items, was presented, and the dialogue " Aunt Jemima's Yißit " was particularly good. Tbe audienoe were not backward in showing their appreciation of tbe efforts of the performers.
