NELSON CITY RIFLES' SOCIAL.

The City Eifles are to be congratulated on the success of their gathering last night, there being a numerous company present at the Provincial Hall. On entering the bni cling one oonld not help admiring the beautiful deooration3 whioh met the gaze on all sides, and which excelled those of last year p. Flagi, rifleß, bajonete, feme, pjlms, and flowers had been called iota requisition to make pleasing design?, Above the stage there was a large stsr composed of eidearms, and beneath tbe flagi were draped so as to form a shield, in the centre of whiob there was a por.rait of the Qu»en. At one aide of the sisge there was a large trie fern, spreading out its graceful foliage. The Committee and particularly Lieutenant Gray and Vol. Hobbs dsßerve credit for their artistic woik. Tbe concert waß must enjoyable. The selections by the Nelson String Band (und»r tbe leadership of Mr Miller) were excellent, and tbe same may be B»id of the efforts of tha vocaliit?. Mrs Roberta (encored), Misb Larkins («noored), Vol. Jones, Mr Tyree (encored), Vol. Hobbs (enoored), Mr J. Pitt (enoorel), Rev J. P. Kempthorne, and Sergeant Jackson (enoored) oontribated solos; Messrs Frank and Con del! a dnett ; Mr Langley a song and dance, for whioh he was recalled ; and Vol. Day reoited well an iuoident relating to the Indian Mutiny. The Irish ditties given by Mr Tyree, and the character songs given by Vol Hobba and Sergeant Jackson, oreated much me.riment. Mrs Hcwie, Miaa Larkins, Miss Jacobs, Captain Jiokoll and Mr J. H. Finney accompanied the vooaliats. Between tbe ooncert and the dance time was &iven for the company to partake of refreshments, whioh were abundantly provided. Mra Gray had charge of the refreshment room, and she is to be complimented on tbe excellent arrangements made to supply the numerous patrons. The ballroom looked bright and gay, the various Volanteer uniforms adding to its pioturcsquenesi. Dancing was kept up with spirit for several hours to the capital music supplied by the String Band ; Vol. Kenning and Corporal Stewart acted aa M.O'a. Oapt. Jickell, Lieuta. Gray and Oakley, Swgeants Jackson and Hobbf, Corporal Stewart, and Volunteers Day, Whitiag, B. Ward, Jones, Hobbs, KenDiag, and Verooe (Secretary) are deserving of being mentioned, as their efforts materially aided to make tbe gathering the pronounoid suootsa it proved to be.
