Passengers — Misses Luokie and Cunningham, Mrs Satohell, nurse and child, Messrs Norman, Farmer, Hodson, Thomas, and Reeves. • The Murray has been detained at Wanganui by heaty southerly weather. As the weather was moderating she expected to leave for Nelson last evening, and is due here this morning. The Charles Edward should reach Foxton ' from Greymouth this morning. The Kennedy will arrive from Wellington yia Motueka this morning, and sail at six o'clock this evening for West Coast ports. The Waverley is expected to leave Wellington for Nelson to-day, and will sail for West Coast ports to-morrow. Ihe Aorere left Patea for Opunake yester^ day. The Lady Barkly sails for Motueka at 7.30 , tbis morning. fche leaves for Golden Bay at six to-morrow morning, The Lily leaves for Motueka at 7 o'clock this morning. The Grafton arrived from West Coast ports yesterday morning, and sailed at 10 a.m for Wellington. She goes on the Patent Slip at Wellington for an overhaul, and will be laid np for a week. The Penguin will arrive from Wellington ihis morning, and sail at 11 a.m for Pioton, Wellington, and Soutb. On enquiry yesterday we learnt that Gapt. - Netiby, of the Helen Denny, was sightly better, but he is still in a very low condition. An inventor claims to bave produced a perpendicular paddle, capable of propelling steamers 50 miles an hour, thus bringing Melbourne witbin 12 days of London. Ihe first screw line of battleship was the Napoleon, French built in 1849, 100 guns, 600 horse-power. Mercator's projection, wbich wonderfully simplified the science of navigation, was *• made public in 1569.
