Entries for the 100 yards championship will be reoeived up till noon on January let. The Kennedy Company.— Last night the inmates of the Old People's Home were in vited by Mr Kennedy to witness the final performance of this Company, and some special items were introduced with the intention of giving them a diversion. The Company, which has gained considerably in popularity during its short season in Nelson, leaves for the West Coast to-day, and we trust that it will meet with a successful career, and revisit Nelson some two months hence. Christmas Goods. — Mr H. D. Jackson announces in our advertising: columns that he has unpacked his new shipments for the Christmas season. From a look round at his extensive stock, we notice many novelties in glassware, leather goods, toys, pioture frames, basketware, and books, while Christmas cards are to be seen in endless variety. Mr Jackson informs us that he has imported double the amount of new goods this year, and, from a glance at the quality and prices, we expect to see him busier than ever this season, 1.0.G.T.— 1n spite of the unfavorable state of the weather, there was a large attendance at the open meeting held in connection with the Loyal Marine Lodge in the Port Hall last evening. Bro Leonard, District Deputy, occupied the chair, and delivered a short address, explaining the objects of the meeting, after which a very creditable programme was gone through, comprising songs, musical selections, recitations, a dialogue, and an address. The very hearty applause that followed the several items showed that they met with the entire approbation of the audience. The contributors were Messrs Kershaw, C. BarUrop, Day, Croudis, Muncaster, F. Barltrop, and Penney, Misses A. Barltrop. Larkins, Penney, M. Barltrop, and Goodall, and the Rev E. C. Isaacs. The dialogue entitled " Coaxed and Hoaxed " was exceedingly well given. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to all who had taken part, and the meeting clcsed with the usual ceremonies at ten o'clock. — On Wednesday evening between thirty and forty members of the city Lodges journeyed to Wakefield, and paid the Hope of Wakefield Lodge an official visit, and were received very cordially. Sister Lines, Chief Templar of tbe Loyal Marine Lodge, ably presided, and a lengthy programme, consisting of songs, recitations, and a diologue, was submitted, and every item was reoeived with hearty approbation. At the close of the meeting refreshments were provided, and needless to say, each one did full justice to all the tempting delioaoies that were displayed. A start was made for home about 11 p.m, and Nelson was reached about two hours later, after a very pleasant and enjoyable outing. Pbize DisTßißunoN,-At half paat two this afternoon the distribution of prizes to tbe pupils will take place at St Mary'a Schools, and the award of scholarships and distribution of prizes in connection with the Colleges will take place in the Provincial Hall this evening. Mabtin's Oils and Balsam cured the horse " Stiff legs," and his rider ; the latter will give anyone a testimonial as to the efficacy of its properties. A Missing Man. — It was reported in town last night that "Jimmy" Andrews, whose absence from his accustomed paths has given rise to fears that some mishap must have overtaken him, is at the present time safe in Wellington, Rumor states that he went on board a steamer and was carried across Cook Strait, but we have been unable to verify the statement. Dangers Ahbap.— By a recent By-law of the Waimea County Council it was provided that all vehicles should carry lights after dark, and knowing this, a gentleman who was driving through the Waimeas on Wednesday night nearly met with a serious mishap. Having taken the precaution to comply with the requirements himself, he gave others credit for doing the same, but near Spring Grove he suddenly came on a vehicle, and if he had not had his horses well in hand a collision must have resulted. The County offioiala should see that their by-law is obeyed. It would also be well if they required that high hedges and trees which obscure the view at road turnings should bs so trimmod as ?o enable people to see venioles ooming from a contrary direction. Abe English women in reality the rudest women in Europe? An "extensively travelled " American lady has lately expressed this flattering opinion to an English interviewer. She has no words to characterise the behaviour of young female persons in confegtioners'' shops?, who "flj to miniater to the wants of the male customers," and even indulge in gay badinage with the inferior creature, whilst they "preserve a stony air of indifference and insult at the approach of a lady." Tcere is, we fear, some truth in this ; but we do not think that better bred ladies are quite so rude to one another as our American triend represents. Fortunately the national reputation was saved by the "exquisite courtesy" of the Duchess of — -, who treated hex American visitor as if stye were a distinguished Royal personage ; but the example is of little profit to moat of us, who are not, unhappily, on familiar terms with the duchess. The one bright spot -in this desert of British rudeness appears to have been the "delightful manners of Englishmen," who will no doubt be as astonished as they are gratified to.find a foreigner complimenting then* upoa 'theu* ' qiwiwfairt R»d

their politeness " A cynical person might be inclined to wonder whether the American lady was young and fair and wealthy, in which oase the disinteres'ed attentions of Englishmen are to some extent comprehensible.
