THE INTERNATIONAL YACHT RACE.
The Amerioans went wild with joy over their victory in the yacht race (says a epeatator). Lord Dunraven came as a sportsman, and took bis defeat as only a genuine lover of the sport in which he engages can. Only onoe did be Bpeak harshly, and, I think, not without justification. The excursion boats on the uecond day of the race gave the Yalfeyrie so moon " back wash" ' as to impede her oonrae, Dunraven ofaimed, from five to six minutes. Personally, I cannot see where the " walking match" came in. The course was 30 miles. The first heat resulted in no race, neither yaoht finishing within the time limit ; the second was won by the Vigilant by five minotea and -some odd teoonda ; the third foand the Valkyrie slightly over twelve minutes hehiaA ; the loatih was ao race ; and the fifth proved the bsst fight of any. After a splendid struggle, and when nearing home, the Valkyrie's spinnaker split in shreds, and so lost her the race by twenty seconds. It appears to be generally admitted that the seamanship displayed on the English yacht was awayibeyond that of its victor, and that th^ real eeoret of the Vigilante suocess lay in itslcbngtrubvion. It was a race between the " keel" ancUthe "centreboard," and thelaUer woDj asit bason every former occasion when the conservative English designers and ownerahave sent over^yaohfa to contest for tbe coveted prizev 'iJut the cup remains with us, noi thstwe eter had any fear it would leave, and^ whenever, in any part of the globe, sportsmen meet to contest for Bupremaoy on the; waters^ there will be foundan American yaohti' manned by American seamen, with "old glory'' proudly flwelling in the breeze, prepared to do battle i.Bnd bring baok fresh Itophiea and add greener laurela.
