Opening op the Boating Season.^- The booting season was opened on Saturday afternoon in the usual manner. ' Genial weather favored the occasion, which passed off successfully, and was witnessed by a fair number of spectators, though the display did not equal that of the past few years, thro.ugh the absence of the Wakatu Boating Club. How-: ever, the Nelson Bowing Club had five boats out, three four-oars and two pair-oars, and the Pilot boat and the Naval Artillery pinnance, the Aurora, fuljy maniied, took part in the procession, which started from the Pilot station, and did a couple of "turns, extending as far as the Bailway wharf, and then returned to the station, where Mr- J. JL Cock, Vice-President of the Nelson Bowing Club (in the absence of Mr Fell, the President,) formally declared the" season open: M.r Cook deplored -the absence of the Wakatn' Club, and hoped that Club would soon ba out again. Captain Fred Thomas, of whose powers something has been heard here, more than fulfilled expectation. He is a vivacious and amusing raconteur, and possesses the rare art of keeping an audience amused without tiring them. He has a full budget of anecdotes and amusing stories from all parts of the world, and relates them' with unusual effect. While he was on the stage, he kept the audience in roars of laughter. His ventriloquial whistling is a .striking feature of the entertainment, and was much appreciated. Mr Harry Barton gave some amusing comic songs and his '* jodelling " was loudly applauded; He also introduced hisfigores, displaying ventriloquial powers of no mean order. Miss BartonT^-the acoompanyisfr—sang very nicely, and was encored, •'Bide a wee" being especially well sung. Captain Thomas also gave a bass aong with great efiect. The entertainment, whioh is an excellent one, concluded with some humorous competitions among boys, which were exceedingly amusing."
