GRAND CONCERT.

The concert given by Messrs Prouso sucl Williams, with the aid of j.obal performers, in the Provincial Hall on July 14th was an unqualified success From a musical point of view there can be bdt one opinion, and we are glad to Bay that the concert was bI-o well patronis^a. Through upforseen oirournstance ibe Athalid overtara wbs made to succeed Mr Prouqe's firqt song, but while the local HarmoDio Sooiety's Orchestra acquitted itaelf wi'h considrable credit in this, and also in the War March of the Priests, with which the second pact was opened, (ho Orchestra eoareety reaohed the .flame i stand nrd as that attained in the recent concert. All the vocalists were heard to advantage last evening. Mr Prouse gave an admirable rendering of Santley's song " Bo'n of 6ha Ocean Isle, 1 ' and reoeived a determined eh» core. His interpretation of Schubert's fiomg «• The Erie Kiog " wai remarkably, effeotiva, being full of dramatic fervor, and being again called upon he comp'ied with the 1 desire of His audience by singing " The Mill Wheel," thus placing his bearers under another obligation. In the Eeoond part he sang the rpVckirigßong 11 Jip3y John " wiih immense sucoeßS, and. on being again called uroa Bang an Irish song with equal snecess. On his first appearanoa last m'ght Mr B. B. Williams seemed to be nervous, bat very Boon the artist triumphed, and his rendering of Saiaman's song :t< I arise from Dreams of Thea," not only called forth hearty applause, but Jed to an erioore in responee to which the talented tenor sang *' My Pretty Jane" with undoubted s-joooss. In the eeeond part he was accorded another encore for his rendering of Barnby'd song 11 The Soft Southern Breez\" w,hen he sang 11 Didst thorj but know," and his later effort the "Litilo Maid. of Arcade" wkb no less successful. In response to the enoore which the last named performance evoked he aang " May God ba with Th.>e. n Thronehout, his. well-trained voioe was heard to undoubted advantage, and in reoitative its fine quiMy waa certainly proved. We have seldom heard Mra Houlker to greater advantage than last evening ; her rendering of Schubert's song in German was given with exquisite expresn'on, and a rapturous enoore marked the appreciation of her hearera. The song " The beating of my own Hear ," was given by way of *epo3e. la the socond part Mrs Houlker was no leaa successful in her rendering of Linley's uong, "Why do I love thee Yef-," and being again oalied upon this finished vocalist rendered ' Love was once a little boy " as only a true. artist coul^. Miss Maakay waß decidedly snts cassful in her rendering of Randeggor's song " Ban c Ridicolo," in whioh she gained an enco-e ; but " Thig heart of mina "by Kellie Ecarcely suited her voice so well. Meßsra Prouse and Williams are entitled to the highest praise for their artt's'io rendering of Benedict's duett "The moon has raised." The pianoforte solo, ( hopina 1 Impromptu, by Miss Jackson, was simply a remarkable performance, the exeouton being moßfc admirable, and thn young lady also merits the highest praise fjr her acoompar)itnen!s, whioh were artistic to a degree seldom observable, the light and shade pourtrayed, whilst aiding the vocalist materially, also proving the artistic capabilities of the accompanist. As conductor cf the Orohestra, Mr Fell is entitUd to highest credit, and tha Harmonic Society are deserving of thanks for having lent their fine piano on. such an oooasion.
