January 20. A number of membars of the House of Commons will support Mr J. Lowthers amendment to the address in reply aiming at the prevention of the influx of destitute aliens into Great Britain.
The distress among ootton operatives ia greater than it has ever been since the American war, and there appears to be no prospect of a settlement of the dispute between the masters and men.
The ' Times ' says that Colonial promises of retenohment inspire polite soeptioißm, anj are sometimes even associated with designs for new loans. Before Colonial stooks are likely to reoover, the misohievous system of attracting men from the oountry into the towns mnst be checked. Lord Carrington, speaking at the East " End, said that the cessation of State aided immigration to New South Wales must not betaken as evidenoe of unkindness to Great Britain.
