Mr Mum'O states that he wrote to the Premier of Victoria on July 21, fully explaining the details connected with the La Bose estate, and authorising him to make use of them as he judged best. An off coast cargo of Australian wheat has been sold at 335. A cargo by the barque Ohiama, from Lyttelton, sold at 31s 6d. Silver is quoted at three shillings and two pence, and five-sixteenths of a penny per ounce. The new oruiser Hawk, 7,350 tons, capsized in the Chatham Docks while being launched. It is reported that another collision has ooourrei between Russian and Afghan troops at Akbasb, on the Upper Oxis, in which seven of the latter were killed. The 'Journal des Debats' admits that English fears as to Russian interferenoo in Afghanistan are natural. MELBOt'BNE, August 17. The ' Argus ' thinks that though the proposed addition to the cable rates is small, yet the underlying principle is objectionable. There is no promise of permanency in charges beiDg arrived at, and under any circumstances it would have been well to defer any alteration until the effect of the entry of New Zealand into the guarantee became known. The ' Age ' does not consider the inorease will be likely to produce serious grumbliDg. The feature of the. Conference, whioh is entirely pleasant, is the accession of New Zealand.
