CANTATA " THE CRUCIFIXION."

Notwithstanding the rain which came on last evening, the Wesleyan Church was crowded to hear the sacred cantata " The Crucifixion," rendered by the Church Choir, assisted by friends We can speak only in terms of warm praise of the rendition of the work. Herr Von Zimmermann acted as conductor, and the success of the whole is the best tribute to his training. The tenor solos and recitative were taken by Mr A. P. Lucas, who was very successful throughout, but more especially in " How sweet is the grace," and " King ever g'orious." The bass solos and recitative were taken by the Eev. H. B. Dewsbury, who, though suffering from an affection of the throat, was heard to great advantage, he being the possessor of a fine rioh voice. His opening solo, " Could ye not watch with me ? " was particularly enjoyable, but perhap3 the most delightful [piece of the whole was the duet between the Bey. Mr Dewsbury and Mr Lucas, "Oh! t'was love." Mr Charles Kidson also took a portion of the bass recitative in a creditable manner. The ohoruses went very well, " Fling wide the gates," " God so loved the world," and " From the Throne of [His Crosß." calling for special mention. Miss Everett acted as organist, and also as accompanyist in the latter portion of the programme, in a manner that left nothing to be desired. After an offertory in aid' of the Ohuroh funds had been taken np, the following selections were given. Mrs Houlker Bang (by request). the aria " 0 reat in the Lord," j from Elijah, and as usual with this lady's performances, this was a treat to listen to. Mr Grace gwas in splendid voioe, and his rendering of "Nazareth" waß moßt enjoyable, while Herr Von Zimmermann's violin solo, a "Andante " Mendelssohn, b " Largo " Handel, was an entrancing performance. Owing to the indisposition bafore mentioned the Bey. Mr Dewsbury did not contribute the solo set down to him, and after he had pronounced the benediction the audience dispersed.—' The Coloni3t,' August 11.
