PETERSBURG, July 29. The Czar and Czarina gave a stat. banquet to the officers of the French fleet at Peteroff. At midnight a band of Russian soldiers wantonly fired a Jewish hamlet at Kiele. Fourteen of the inhabitants were burned to death and twenty badly injured. The Jews m their desperation attacked the soldiers and killed several of them. COLOMBO. July 29. Mrs Picket*, an Australian lady who was converted to Buddhism, committed suicide. In accordance with her will her remains were publicly cremated in the presence of seven thousand Buddhists. TEHERAN, July 28. The girl Greenfield has assured the British Consul that she had been converted to I.lamism and followed her husband. She refused to return cf her own free will. LISBON", July 28. An armed boat's orew belonging to tha President Erra Zuriz, a Chillian cruiser which has just been released by the French Government, pursued the Portuguese police here for preventing men from embarking, and a fight was narrowly averted. The Chillian commander afterwards apologised bat not till all the Portuguese warships fn tbe harbour had cleared for action. Several foreign consuls are likely to take forcible means to prevent the President Erra Zuriz from kidnapping subjeota of their nations. It is believed that she has already many concealed on board. In the course of the debate en the Victorian budget Mr Gillies, who was Premier in the late Ministry, condemned the proposal to issue treasury bonds. If the Treasurer had done hi. duty there would bave been no necessity to come forward with a defioit. HOBART, July 30. It is reported that Mr Fysch will succeed Sir E.
