HARMONIC SOCIETY 'S CONCERT .
In eke was a wry large attendance at the Provincial Hail last cveninr; on the occasion of tho ilft.moniu Society's concert, and, as a wbole, tbo prforaninee gave a great amount ot pieasuro. oiernclule Bennett':, charming cantata " The May (jjeen" occupied the first part cf the programme, but the performance was nofc ail that we had anticipated. Miss Piatt sang the music allot. cd to the Queen, Mies Beeves appearing as the May Qae-_n, Mr Lucas as the Lover, and Mr Grace as Bobin Hood, but from some cause none of the Eoloists did themselves justice. The orchestra, too, appeared to have had in_uflic_er_t practice, and the t ; mo was not perfect. Of the choruses, "0, Melancholy Plight" and "With a iaugh aa we go round" were the most praiseworthy, the effective choru. "Hark! their eo;.cs, ' being somewhat marred. If, however, tae first pj.r_ was disappointing, the j saeonc. part more than made up for it. The overture from Auber's " Masaniello," by the orchestra, with Professor Zimmermatin as leader, wa. a tre-.t, and the demonstrative encore showed the appreciation of the audience. Miss Pratt then Bang witb line feeling T. Rodney's song " The Soldier's dream," and her artistic rendering brought a demand for a repetition. The violin solo, an elegic by 11, Ernst, performed by Professor Zimmerman!., was richly enjoyed, and the performer responded to the demands of his delighted hearers with a cavatioa by Ball', no less artistically rendered. A duett by Rubenstein, " The Angel," was sung by Mrs Walker and Miss Pratt, and much appreciated , after which an instrumental trio, by Haydn, was performed by Miss Jackson (pianoforte), Miss Kidson (violin), and Professor Zimmermann (violincello), and for its execution each of the performers is entitled to high praise, Professor Zimmermann ably conducted, and Miss L. Jackson acted as pianistc. The concert terminated with the National Anthem.
