FIRE AT TAKAKA

It was with great regret we learnt yester day tbat the larger portion of Mr Baigent's caw mill at Takaka, together with all the planibg machinery, caw benches and sircul&r caws, as well as abont 30,000 i-et of totara, bad been destroyed by fire So far no detailed particulars have been recehed, and nothing is known in town as to tbe origin of the fire, which broke oat early yesterday morning. The machinery in the mill was of considerable value, tbe planing machine alone was, we uuderstand, worth £300, and the totara destroyed would represent a loss of nearly £25.0. Altocether tho damage is estimated at nearly £800, and we are sorry to say there was no insurance. Coming as it does after his recent very severe loss, when hia mill buildings, eto, valued at £4000. were destroyed, this is indeed a heavy blow for Mr Baigent. Besides the actual loss, it will stop operations, and that at a time when orders were numerous.
