The correspondent of the ■*. Avgu*' in a letter from Hava,nah Harbor states that the Messageries Maritimes steamer Tanaiswith 40 Numea residents, including it ia feelievsd several high French,officiate on board recently visited the New Hebrides group. It ia believed that the trip was undertaken at the inetanoe of the French Government. While at Fila a meeting was held on board, at which resolutions were passed which indicated the establishment of French rula at Fila in tho immediate futare. I\ was also announced that the Governor of New Caledonia would shortly piy a visit to the settlement in a war ship. People of all nationalities were invited to the meeting presumably to secure the concurrence of all
Bearing on the above episode a well authenticated story conies from Nuraca to the effect that when Mr Romilly was appointed English Consul for the New Hebrides, the Governor of New Caledonia went bo far aa to ask him not to proceed thither until his Exoellency had oommunicated with^Paris on the subject of the appoiutmsnt, but this Mr Bomilly deeliried to do.
