MAJOR KENNEDY AND CAPTAIN BEVILLE.
A correspondent of the ' Calcutta Englishman ' at Bangoon gives florae particulars of the deaths ot Major Kennedy and Captain Bailie. It appears that Major Kennedy, commanding in tho Chitdwiu district, hearing that a dttcoit baud under tho Bayingan Prince ami Jio Tuungyn was in his viciuiiy, with Lieutenant I'iumer and fif«y rifles of the Hyderabad contingent, came suddenly upon tho diicoira, who faood (heir pursuers. Ffom private Bouice.* we loam that when the mounted infact'cy. led by theoe officers, first aitacked the mouahtery aud liviuses occupied by tLe dacuital they wero checked by overpowering numbcis, and had temporarily to retire. Th'-y, however, still cuutinued to keep a fire on the dacoits until 'reinforcements arrived. The dacoiis had mounted this roof of the monastery and were firing downward.-", and the bullet which struck Captain Beviile enterod his shoulder, and, passiug downward, lo:lged in his spine. He lived about an hour after he was shot. Major Kennedy, who was over 6 feet in height, and the model of a soldier, was shot later on, while leading the infantry, who had just come up. He was badly wounded above the elbow of the xiyht arm; but he really bled to death, and had medical assistance been available, bis life would, in all probability, have been saved.
