AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE.
The Dunedin correspondent of the • Monnt Ida Chronicle' writes:— Mr Burtou, the landscape photographer, had an unpleasant experience lately. He went round to Milford Sound with the Tarawera excursion, and was left there on Ihe understanding that a steamer would call for him in about six weeks' time. At the appointed time the Mararoa stfamed up the Sound, and fired a gun as a signal for Mr Burton to embark. By the time he got to the beach the fteamer had turned and proceeded on her voyage. The Waihora entered the Sound the following week, fired a " b' lJ\f?,f the «nfol"te^3 photographer to e'ibark, and then,iika the Mararoa, departed without giving him a chance to do so. As thie was the last steamer io call at Milford Found, Mr Barton was on the point of despair, as he well might be, with the prospect of spending the winter in that desolate spot. A steamer fftt«, however, sent in especially for him, and though it was midnight when she arrived, Mr Burton was on board in a remarkably sport space of time, and is said to have expressed his opinion of the capt'iina of the Muraroa and Waihora in a few brief but expres-ive sentences. While on the subject, I might mention that Mr Docherty, who has been for some yeara a Government prospector on the West Coast Sounds, ha 3 not been hear*d of for some time, and uneasiness is felt on his account, as he started to walk from Milford Sound to the head of Lake Manapouri unaccompanied,
