WRECK AT THE CHATHAM
ISLANDS. (Per United Pxiess Association.)1 Ohbistchdrch, September 19. The steamer Kahu, from the Chatham Islands, brings an account of the wreck of th« brigantine- Omaha, near Gwanga on Julj 24th. The vessel was anchored about half a mile from the fchore, for the the purpose ol discharging cargo, when a light northerly breeze springing up she hove up acchor and made sail on the port tack. So m afterwards the wind veered to the east-, and the ship, in tacking, missed stays, and drove on to the reef; The crew and residents endeavored to get her off, but failed. Her cargo was got ashore, and the vessel dismantled. She was sold, after inspection by the Surveyor, for £31, She was insured in the Union Offioe for £1300, and belonged to Captain Fairchild, and Messrs; Meiklejohn and Hood. An enquiry was held before Mr Leighton, B.M, and Mr Eaynor, who suspended Captain Darnell's certificate for six month?.
