TE WHITI AS A RANCHERO.
(From the ' Taranaki Herald,' Sept. 21th.) The object of the Parihaka meeting that has just concluded, was for the purpose of arranging a presentation of 2000 head of cattle to Te Whiti. The meeting was a most representative one, there being natives from miles distant present. It will naturally be wondered where Te Whiti is going to graze such a large number of cattle, bat this will readily be seen when it is stated that he has subdivided the land around Parihaka into large paddocks, securely fenced*. In future no pigs will beat the settlement, and it is said that the few porcines that survived the .recent slaughter have been already killed. The cattle above mentioned will be contributed by natives in all parts of the Colony, and should the gigantic scheme ever be carried out, Te Whiti will be a runner of a ranche of considerable magnitude. A native who attended the late meeting informed a pakeha that things were in a bad state at Parihaka, but whether he took this view of matters from the fact that two natives died there on Tuesday, %nd a couple ofdays before that, a woman was found dead in the bush—it ia difficult to conjecture. The next phase in Te Whiti's career, viz., a Banohero, ought to be hailed with satisfaction by everyone, as he reiUy seems determined to put the native land in Taranaki to what it was intended for, viz., cattle and sheep grazing. ;,:^\ ::;::'"; ;■/■ " ':
