"C," IN THE 'EVENING MAIL.'

To the Editor of the Colonitt. Sir,—The individual who wrote in the columnsjcjf the • Evening Mail' to-night over the letter"" C " is very wide of the truth when he meanly insinuates that my letter, which appeared in your issue of the 6th inst, with an extract from.au Auckland paper, was the production of your own office, under the guise ol a letter to the Editor. He makes one remark, however, for which very few will be inclined to quarrel with him, viz., " that the correspondence columns of newspapers are often prostituted by spiteful writers; but) when he says that this state of things culminated in your columns, Sir, he must either ba a " new chum " or very " fat headed" in-1 deed, not to be aware that you have not the j .slightest chance of holding the championship in that line in Nelson. Perhaps "C " will be good enough to explain" why he stigmatises the Auckland • Evening Bell' as " one of the mo3t scurrilous papers in the Colony." Is it because the Editor took a Bishop to task for his (to put a most generous construction upon them) imprudent, unchristian, and uncharitable utterances from the pulpit; is it because in his just indignation he castigated an agent of the " Press Ass.," for his imprudence in telegraphing those remarks at the cost of the indignant person to whom they were sent; or, is it because the Editor of "the ' Evening Bell' is understood to be an erstwhile dissenting Minister. Yours, Ac, G. Nelson, July Bth, 1887.
