' A terribly sad accident, resulting in the death of Charles Seed, aged 14 years, second son of the Secretary of the Custo:rs department, occurred this afternoon; It appears that the deceased, along with another lad named Vennell, armed with a revolver and a breech-loading fowling-piece respectively, went forth to destroy a, cat that had killed a pet canary, but not coming across the animal they in fun assumed the character of a policeman and 'bushranger; each presenting his weapon at the other, when suddenly that held by Vennell exploded, and,the charge^ Seed's heart. Death was, of course, instantaneous. Vennellls gun had a Morris ] tube inserted, and was'chargWdwitn a ballet.1 l'he greatest sympathy is expressed for Mr Seed at the death of his son, who was a very promisingUad. . / The Divorce suit of Fordham v. Boyd has been amicably settled. " George Hill, a farmer at the Lower Hutt, died suddenly this morning. ;■. Mr Booth has concluded his Temperance mission here, and has been presented with a cheque and silver-miuinted emu egg inkstandl as an acknowledgement of his services in the temperance cause during the past three weeks.- It was-mentioned that • during the mission 1873 pledges were taken and 3704 blue ribbons distributed. The choir presented Mrs Booth with a portfolio of New Zealand scenes, painted in water colors by Mr W. Barraud, of Wellington. AUCKLAND, June 22, A fire broke out at 5-30 p.m in the top storey of Alfred Buckland's Queen-street buildings, occupied by John Allen, wholesale warehousemen. The compartments were completely gutted. The insurances on Allen's stock was £2200 in the Colonial Insurance Company; tbe buildings were insured by Mr Buckland for £600 in the South British : Messrs Hesketh and Aitken, seedsman, occupied the ground floor. Their stock was damaged by water; it was insured for £200 in the°South British. Allen closed the premises at 5 o'clock, and cannot account for tne origin of the fire.*' '"
