Prombnadb Conoeet. —We remind onr ! readers that the promenade concert in aid ol the funds of the Garrison Band, will take place in the Theatre this evening, and residents of the Country will observe that the late train will be delayed till half-past ten, thus giving them an opportunity of attending the concert.. A very large attendance may ba expected. ,■ ... . Customs' Duty..—The rumors which had been afloat for some days previous, induced many of the merohants to effect clearances before the Budget was brought down, fearing that if they omitted increased dutiea might be imposed. Yesterday, something like £1000 was received at the Custom House, Nelson, on goods taken out of bond, the greater portion of tbia sum having been paid in duty on under proof spirits. The San Fbanoisco Mail.—This mail has been announced to close at one o'clock this afternoon, and it will be despatched by the Botorua, but a supplementary mail -will be made up and forwarded to Wellington by the Taiaroa. This mail will not close till 5 p.m. Football.—A match will be played in the Botanical Keserve this afternoon between the Nelson and College Clubs, commencing at three o'clock. Young Men's Christian Association.—At the Y.M.C.A's rooms on Thursday evening about 60 attended the first of a series of social meetings, when a very enjoyable hour was spent. We learn that a tea meeting ia to be held in connection with the Association on July 2, which promises to be a great success. As it is intended to make an effort to wipe off the debt ;of the Association, donations towards the tea are being received by the Committee. Fasx Travelling.—The four operators who were ordered to Cable Bay,' did some rather fast travelling. They left Blenheim by buggy and pair at 5 p.m. on Saturday, and arrived at Havelock at 9 p.m. Left again at 11 p.m. for Cooper's, arriving there at one in the morning. At 7,a.m on Sunday they left again, but were delayed at the Pelorus bridge for about two hours, having to swing the buggy across the river by means of a rope stretched from a portion of the bridge to a scaffolding on the other side, a distance of about GO feet. They left the bridge at 9*15 a.m., and arrived at Cable Bay at 4 o'clock on Sunday afternoon. They were driven from Havelock by Mr Pickering, of Clark and Pickering, and the journey, deducting stoppages, only occupied 12 hours. With the exception of about 5 miles between Havelock and Cooper's, the roads are in splendid condition.—' Express.' ; . ' Stdnby Taiwhangi ig at present obtaining tho signatures of Natives to a petition, which runs as follows:—"That your petitioners pray and beg to add that we are dissatisfied with the constitution and operation of the present Native Lands Court and Native Committees, and are convinced that the same ara liable to great abuses, and we desire to have them abolished at this session. The Wellington ' Post' of Monday states: —In the course of his remarks yesterday at the Theatre Eoyal, Mr Booth stated • that the collections during the present mission in Wellington had not been sufficient to pay expenses. Mr Booth assured those present that not one single penny of the collection went into his pocket. ■
