FIRE.
Aboot tteee1 o'clock 'this mprning a fire brctkecut in the boarding-house in Nile street Eastj known as" Bose Lodge j" and containing some fourteen :'©r fifteen 7 rooms. fi The; property was owned.by' Mrs Askew, who formerly conducted the boarding establishment, but thip has: of ] ate been carried on by Mr and Mrs Snelling, but who were, we learn; about to ; give up the business, and already the boarders had departed. Mrs Snelling, her husband being away from Nelson, has for the padt: week or two had her hands 'full withsickness in her family, aud last ;night before retiring to rest she made up a fire in one of the rooms that hot water might be available; About three o'clock she was awakened by one of ihe children, when she: heard a crackling j noise, and" going to; look,, found the h'Juse j on' fire. She hastily got the children out of the : building, and cried for assistance, but not one of the family saved nio're clothing ihan could : be; hastily snatched up,'and they are consequently an a sad plight. Onassistance arriving some few things were 'saved from the: rooms that' were not then 'burning, 'and Mr Snpdgrass very' kindly took1 !Mrs 'Sneliing 'and her five children to his residence j where'1 at present he is giving them shelter. The' 'Fire Brigade were on the spot with commendable speed considering all things,:but some few minutes mightl have been saved if the firebells were! really serviceable for alarm purposes. -They 'set to work steadily, and though tbe fire :likd 'a'most complete hold, and a strong breeze: ■wa's blowing, the fire was extinguished before ihe entire place was burnt, though practically the loss'; is a 'total'ori'e. The house and: furniture- was, as far1 as we could learn, insured in but one office, the Australian Mercanti'e, the joinfi policy being for £1000; but the-greater portion of this is re-nuured;— f Colonist,' June 11. ■ l ■'■'■ :'■ ' ; The information we were able'to gat between 3 and 4 o'clock yesterday'mbrning,): as to; the insurances upbn Bose Lodge'and its contents •waisnot altoge.',lier accurate.
