The New Zealand branch of the Salvation Army have published their balance-sheet. The amounts received under the spiritual department since the Army commenced operations in the Colony has not equalled the expenditure. There was a bank overdraft on 31st December of £148 and loans to £360. The expenditure has been £4000. ; St. Matthew's Chubch, Dunedin, is said to be the most substantial Gothic church in the Colony; yet it only cost £7000, whilst Knox Church cost £12,000. , A comical incident which occurred not far from Milton the other day is thus related by the Bruce 'Herald': —" The autioneer resident at the place received instructions from a person living at a considerable distance. to sell a quantity of household furniture. The sale was effected, and the proceeds handed over to the vendor. Shortly afterwards, the auctioneer, noticed that a house belonging to himself was empty.- The tenant.-was'very much in arrear with .his- rent, and■.,-.-».e (the autioneer) had contemplated a distraint. Upon making inquiry he found that the party for whom he sold the furnitnre was the son-in-law of the defaulting tenant,, that the furniture was the property of his father-in-law (the defaulter) and that he had sold the security for the debt owing to himself, and handed over the proceeds to the debtor. He did not feel in suoh a happy frame of mind, as usual."
