The Owake correspondent of the Clutha ' Leader' states that the powder mill is to be taken over by a company, with a capital of £10,000. The mill is now executing a Government order for powder for the big guns. There are no fewer than one hundred and forty-two rivers, treams, and streamlets between New Plymouth and Wanganui. They are a capital feature of the country, but rather expensive from a road-making point of view. Last session Mr Seddon called for a return of existing endowments for secondary and University education in the Colony. That return was on Thursday last laid upon the table of ' the- House. The net profits since the abolition of pro- i viuces are set down at £13,698, and the amount spent on higher education has been £12,634. The endowment reserves vested in governing bodies of public secondary school g amount in area to 152,234 acres, having a capital value of £289,038, and bringing an annual income- of- £14,538/' The total net profits from these reserves and receipts from School Commissioners since the abolition of provinces amount to £68,305.
