CORRESPONDENCE.
SCABBY SHEEP. To the Editor of the Colonist. Sir, —In what I presume to be your leading article in this morning's ' Colonist,' you very sensibly remark that someone has failed to perform his duty, and I also consider that you showed your good sense in not giving expression to your opinions ,on the subject until sure of the merits of the case, but when you say that whilst it may be difficult for those who suffer pecuniarily by the transaction to obtain redress, in my opinion you go rather far. Ido not want to take up your time when likely more important matters claim your attention, but I should like, as one of the men who may possibly suffer over the matter, to say a few words. It is no doubt a cowardly action to hit a man when down, but desperate diseases require desperate remedies, and as it appears to be rather an important matter, you must allow me space. The facts are shortly these:—A sheep drover comes to Marlborpugh and buys a mob of sheep from the settlers, who have all clean certificates, and he starts with these sheep for a ..neighboring province —and understand, without permission from the Government he could not possibly travel with these sheep—and what is the result ? After obtaining permission from the Government to start with these sheop he is stuck up
by the department in Nelson, and I ask is this right? You most undoubtedly must be a better authority on the matter than me, but I think if sheep farmers and sheep' drovers are to be Scab Inspectors, then I say that both lines are a mistake; but I expect that the matter will be in more competent hands than mine. I fancy that your very generous sentiments in regard to those who may possibly suffer over, the matter is a mistake. Yours, &c, One Who May Suffeb. Nelson, March 29, 1884.
