SAD STORY OF DISTRESS AND DISHONESTY.
At the Middlesex sessions a sad case was disposed of. Elizabeth Jesßop, a youug_married, woman, was-, charged ;with afceajing'sijf^cfcets, viilueidjlae $5, the property" of 'Mary Withers, her mistress, a mantlemaker. Sergeant Greet,who arrested the. prisoner, said he hall made >' enquiries in 'tie case, and found that up to this time the prisoner had borne a good character as aii hunest, hard-working woman. When he took the prisoner into custody he found her in a most deplorable .condition. There iwas no furniture in the place, except a small table and a
few yags in ;8 Corner, which served as a bed. Miss Withers was examined, and, in answer to the Judge, said she engaged the prisoner to assist herl She was employed from nine in the morning till eight at nigfht. The J v udge«-r-How t much.did. you pay her perweeMfor fhat?^ Miss Withers— Epur eHillings (sensation). The Judge -1-Did'you give her her food? Misa Withers—No; I only get one shilling each for the jackets myself when completed. I have to use two! sewing machines, find my own >cdtttanland needles, and I can, by working hard, make two in s a day:,. The Judge said it "was"; a: sad-state of:things. :-The: prisoner,® when called upon, said she had nothing to eat. for»,three-.days. The Judge, while cotntniseratingAwith the prisoner, said it" could not be allowed that distress could justify dishoneßty, and sentenced the prisoner to six weeks' imprisonment.
